You may be aware that Libraries NI have proposed reducing the opening hours of Finaghy Library by 10%. Over the last number of years Finaghy Library has succeeded in providing the largest community participation rate of any library in Northern Ireland. It provides a welcoming service for all in our community and is one of the best used libraries in Northern Ireland.
While I recognise that there have been cuts across many public services I feel that the impact of reducing this valuable service will be far greater than the modest sum that may be saved. Libraries are one of the most important assets we have; vital spaces for learning and enjoyment. They provide well established and genuine social hubs used by families and people of all ages and from all parts of the community. To reduce the level of service that Finaghy Library can provide is to reduce one of the last free, indoor, family friendly public spaces in south Belfast.

While the consultation only offers five options, all of which provide for reduced hours, I would encourage everyone who values their local library and does not wish to see a reduction in hours to respond outlining their opposition and demonstrate the full worth in which we hold our community libraries.
